Lady Liberty with the Torch of Liberty and the proud American eagle give this gold coin its distinctive appearance. The Gold Eagle was first minted in 1986. Initially, the years on the Gold Eagles were minted in Roman numerals; it wasn’t until 1992 that they began using Arabic numerals. Like all bullion coins, Gold Eagles are theoretically legal tender in the country of issue. However, their gold value far exceeds their face value.
