More than gold trading
Born from a passion for precious metals, grown with responsibility
1873
The beginnings
The name Degussa originates from the founding of “Deutsche Gold- und Silber-Scheideanstalt formerly Roessler” in Frankfurt am Main. The traditional abbreviation DEGUSSA was derived from the initial letters of this name.
1890s
Established as a brand name
Just a few years after its founding, the name Degussa became established as a brand and company name. By the 1890s at the latest, it was firmly in use – long before the company was officially renamed Degussa AG in 1980 (today: Evonik Industries AG).

Originally known as a refinery for precious metals, Degussa developed from 1890 onwards into a leading manufacturer of industrial chemicals for the construction and ceramics industries, dental products, as well as for the production of carbon black and charcoal.

Apart from the naming rights, there is no corporate continuity between the historical Degussa AG and today’s Degussa Sonne/Mond Goldhandel GmbH.
2000er
Separation of the precious metals division
In the 2000s, Degussa AG (now Evonik Industries AG) divested itself of its original core business: precious metals processing. This marked the end of the direct link between the name and its historical field of activity.
2010
Re-establishment under a traditional name
In 2010, a privately held group acquired the rights to use the Degussa brand name for precious metals trading and founded Degussa Sonne/Mond Goldhandel GmbH. This company continues the name but has no operational connection to the former Degussa AG (now Evonik Operations GmbH).

Historical topics, including the actions of Degussa AG during the Second World War, are documented on the website of Evonik Industries AG. From Degussa’s perspective, we acknowledge the importance of addressing the past with an understanding of its historical context.
