What are circulation gold coins?

So-called circulation gold coins are coins that were previously used as a means of payment. As a result, they often show typical signs of wear. Many of these coins were minted in such high quantities that today – provided they are in good condition – they are also traded as popular investment coins. Examples of circulation gold coins include the 20-mark gold coins of the German Empire, Austrian ducats, crowns and florins, British sovereigns, as well as Dutch gold guilders.

Can I place a limit order?
A limit order, meaning a purchase with a specified maximum price, is not possible.
Opening hours of the locations
You can find the opening hours here after selecting the respective location.
Are my data shared with third parties?
Your data are safe with us. For the entire ordering and delivery process, the following applies: protecting your data is of utmost importance to us. We therefore only collect information that is necessary for processing. Your data will not be shared with third parties who are not involved in the ordering and delivery process.
At what times can I place an order online?
Our online shop is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Are there price differences between online orders and purchases in a location?
No. The prices shown in our online shop also apply in all our locations. Our product prices are updated every five minutes in line with the international gold price.
Can I also sell metals to Degussa?
Of course, we also purchase precious metals. You can have your precious metals checked and valued directly in one of our Degussa locations. Our experts will advise you personally and determine the current purchase price transparently. You can find all further information here. Please refer to our price list for current buy and sell prices (updated every five minutes).

Product information

Margin taxation for silver coins
Our silver coin prices are final prices. All taxes and duties are already included. Depending on the product category, precious metals may be subject to different tax regulations. All stated prices include the applicable taxes.
Are the offered products exclusively new goods?
Our Degussa precious metal bars are unused new products with a certificate.

So-called “bullion coins” (1-ounce gold coins such as Vienna Philharmonic, Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, China Panda, American Eagle and Buffalo) usually bear the minting year of the current issue and are in mint condition.

For smaller denominations, the images are representative of the respective coin type. Years or design variations are supplied depending on availability. There is no entitlement to a specific year. This also applies to the circulation gold coins we offer. Coins from the numismatics category are, of course, excluded from this.
How are Degussa bars packaged?
Our precious metal bars are produced on behalf of Degussa Goldhandel GmbH by LBMA-certified companies in Switzerland. Up to a fine weight of 100 g, they are delivered with a certificate of authenticity sealed in a blister pack (on the underside of the bar). Larger bars are packaged in protective sleeves.
Are Degussa bars LBMA-certified?
In general, only so-called standard bars are LBMA-certified. A standard gold bar (“Good Delivery bar”) weighs nominally 400 troy ounces (approx. 12.44 kg). However, the permitted fine weight of gold standard bars can vary between 350 and 430 ounces (750 to 1,100 troy ounces for silver).

Our bars are produced on behalf of Degussa Goldhandel GmbH by LBMA-certified manufacturers.

Degussa currently does not have its own production facilities for precious metal bars. Our aim is to offer our customers precious metal investments of the highest quality at attractive prices. For this reason, our bars – bearing the globally recognised lettering and the sun-moon logo – are manufactured by leading refineries in Switzerland and Germany, whose decades of experience stand for these quality standards.

Degussa is committed to the responsible and sustainable use of global raw material resources. We therefore only have our bars produced by manufacturers that comply with the internationally recognised “London Good Delivery Standard” and provide full traceability of their supply chain.
What is the standard quality of investment coins?
Investment coins – like circulation coins – are minted in large quantities using machines. Typically, a single die is used to produce a large number of coins. Minor irregularities, dents, nicks or similar imperfections that may occur during the manufacturing process as well as during transport and handling are therefore unavoidable. Differences depending on the year of issue or slight signs of wear may also occur.

However, these do not represent a reduction in value, as with investment coins – unlike collector coins – the focus is not on perfect visual appearance but on the material value as an investment. For this reason, they are not classified into the quality categories commonly used for collector coins.
Why is gold exempt from VAT?
Physical investment gold is exempt from VAT in Switzerland. This includes gold bars with a high level of fineness as well as certain gold coins that qualify as investment gold. One requirement is that gold bars must have a fineness of at least 995/1,000. Gold coins generally need a fineness of at least 900/1,000, must have been minted after 1800, and must be or have been legal tender in their country of origin.

Other precious metals such as silver, platinum or palladium are generally subject to VAT. However, under certain conditions this may not apply – for example, if the metals are stored in a customs-free warehouse and are not introduced into the taxable economic cycle.

Ordering process

Are volume discounts available?
No discounts can be granted.
Can I cancel my order?
Investment products are excluded from cancellation rights, as their prices are subject to fluctuations in the financial markets over which we have no influence (see our Terms and Conditions § 6 Cancellation and Exceptions).
Can I combine multiple orders into one delivery?
No. Each order automatically generates a delivery note and a shipping process. This results in corresponding logistics costs for each order. We kindly ask for your understanding that a separate shipping fee applies to each order.
Can the purchase price change after placing an order?
Once you have placed your order, you will immediately receive an order and confirmation by email. This confirms which product you have purchased at which price. This price is binding for us. However, we expect prompt payment within the next 3 working days.
Do I need to register to make an online purchase?
We recommend registering as a customer so that we can provide you with the best possible service. However, you can also shop with us without creating a customer account.
Do I need to order online first to purchase goods in a store?
In addition to our classic Degussa bars, our stores also offer a wide range of investment coins from various issuers. Placing an online order in advance is not required for purchases on site.
What does the price countdown mean?
Prices in the online shop are updated every 5 minutes. During the ordering process, however, you have 15 minutes to complete your order. During this time, the price remains unchanged for you. The remaining time is displayed at the top right of the online shop. If you need more than 15 minutes to complete your order, your shopping cart will need to be refreshed.
What is the status of my order?
If you have registered as a customer, you can view the status of your order at any time in your customer account.
How will I know if my payment has been received?
As soon as we have received and processed your payment, you will automatically be notified by a system-generated email confirming receipt of payment as well as the shipment or readiness for collection of your order. Therefore, enquiries about the processing status of your order by email, phone or similar are not necessary and do not speed up the processing of your order.
How long does my bank transfer take?
Based on experience, it may take 2 to 3 working days between the debit from your account and the actual credit to our account. As soon as we have received your payment, you will be informed by email.
What costs are incurred when placing an order?
In addition to the purchase price of the respective items, shipping costs apply. Shipping via value courier costs CHF 25.00 for orders up to a value of CHF 25'000.00. Delivery is free of charge for orders above CHF 25'000.00. If you choose to collect your order from one of our locations, no shipping costs will apply. Further information on shipping costs and shipping methods can be found here.
Is cash payment possible when collecting online orders?
Payment for orders placed via the Degussa online shop is made in advance by bank transfer or, for orders up to CHF 15'000.00, by credit card (Mastercard or Visa). Cash payment for online orders upon collection at the selected Degussa store is not possible.
Authorisation for collection in store
If you would like a third party to collect the goods on your behalf, you can find the corresponding authorisation form here. Please complete and sign it. Kindly use only this authorisation form and observe the notes highlighted in grey regarding identity verification (original ID or certified copy).

Shipping

Is delivery abroad possible?

Is it possible to delay the shipment?
Delaying the delivery of goods is not possible. As soon as we have received your payment, we must dispatch the goods. Please take any potential absence into account before placing your order.
Is my shipment insured?
Of course, your order is insured during transport.
Is delivery to a parcel locker or post office possible?
Delivery to a parcel locker or post office is not possible, as the handover must be made in person.
Can I have my order delivered to a Degussa store for collection?
Yes, this is possible. All information on personal collection at a Degussa store can be found on our shipping page.
Can I arrange a delivery date?
For orders below CHF 2'500.00, it is not possible to arrange a delivery date by phone, email or similar means.

For orders above CHF 2'500.00, a representative of the value courier company will contact you by phone to arrange a suitable delivery time (morning / afternoon). It is not possible to specify a preferred delivery date.
What should I check when receiving my delivery?
When the shipment is handed over to you by the courier, please ensure that the delivery is intact. If this is not the case (e.g. if the packaging is damaged), please refuse acceptance. Please note, however, that the courier is not obliged to open the shipment in your presence.
Do I have to receive the goods in person?
If you are not personally present to receive the package, please provide us with the full names of the persons authorised to accept it. For identification, this person will need the following documents: a written authorisation from you, a copy of your ID, and their own ID or passport (original or certified copy).
How high are the shipping costs?
All information on shipping methods and costs can be found on the shipping page.

Selling process

Why do I only receive an estimated value for some products?
For some products, it is not possible to determine a reliable value in advance due to varying alloys. For the initial price estimate, we therefore assume a standard alloy. You only need to specify the weight of your shipment. Our specialists will then analyse the key components and determine the actual value accordingly.
What is a safebag?
For the collection shipping option, the value courier will bring a safebag. You place your pre-packed goods into the safebag yourself and then seal it using the self-adhesive security closure.

The safebag measures 43 × 33 cm. Please ensure that your pre-packed goods do not exceed DIN A4 size so that they fit into the safebag.
I assume my goods are only second-grade. What should I do?
Simply mark the relevant item with the option “second-grade” during the selling process. The purchase price will then be calculated taking into account the corresponding deduction.
I do not know the fineness of my goods.
If you do not know the fineness of your goods, simply enter the weight and select the option “no specification” for the fineness. You will then receive a preliminary estimated value as a non-binding purchase price for your submission. After analysis, we will of course pay the actual value.
Is the price binding at the time of concluding the sale?
You will receive a binding purchase price based on the condition you have specified (first-grade or second-grade). The condition is that the goods are sent to us within one week.
How should I package my goods?
Always package your goods in a non-transparent manner and ensure they are protected against scratches or other damage. The goods should not be able to move inside the package. Dental gold in particular must always be packaged separately in a closed container or bag.
What is the timer?
Our (estimated) prices may change במהלך the day. Therefore, your shopping cart is reserved for 15 minutes at the displayed price. The remaining time is shown at the top right of the shop.
After the 15 minutes have expired, your shopping cart will remain, but you will need to confirm any price changes again.
What happens if my goods turn out to be second-grade?
If the inspection shows that the goods are only second-grade, the corresponding deduction will be applied. You will of course be informed of the adjustment by email.

Value storage Price list Duty-free warehouse

Price list

What prices apply for storage?
The currently valid prices for storage can be found in our price list.

Duty-free warehouse

What is a duty-free warehouse and where is it located?
A duty-free warehouse is a transit storage facility for goods, where items can be stored under special customs regulations. Originally, it was primarily used for the temporary storage of goods in international trade.

Today, it is also possible to store or trade precious metals via a duty-free warehouse. One advantage is that, for certain metals, VAT is only incurred when the metal is physically delivered.

The high-security storage facilities are located in Switzerland and meet the highest security standards for the professional storage of precious metals.
What fees and costs apply for storage?
The applicable fees and costs for storage in the Degussa duty-free warehouse can be found in the price list.
Which products are exempt from VAT when purchased into a Degussa duty-free warehouse?
In addition to 1 kg, 5 kg and 15 kg silver bars, 100 g platinum bars and palladium bars, as well as 1-ounce silver coins (Maple Leaf, Britannia and Krugerrand), are available free of VAT when purchased via the Degussa duty-free warehouse.
Why are silver, platinum and palladium exempt from VAT when purchased into a Degussa duty-free warehouse?
Silver, platinum and palladium are generally not exempt from VAT. Following a clarification by the Federal Ministry of Finance in 2022, margin taxation for silver investment coins can no longer be applied in many cases.

However, when purchasing these precious metals into a Degussa duty-free warehouse, VAT can still be legally avoided. The reason is that the metals are located in a customs-controlled area during storage. VAT is only incurred when the metal is physically removed from the duty-free warehouse and enters the regular economic cycle.
Can I also add gold to the Degussa duty-free warehouse?
Currently, only so-called white metals, namely silver, platinum and palladium, are available via the Degussa duty-free warehouse. Gold, on the other hand, is generally exempt from VAT and can therefore be purchased directly without tax disadvantages.
What happens if I request delivery of the products?
Delivery is possible at any time by prior appointment. Upon delivery, the applicable VAT amount will be determined and charged accordingly.
