Europe’s most famous gold investment coin comes from Vienna. Münze Österreich AG has been producing the “Vienna Philharmonic” since 1989 on behalf of the Austrian government. At one point, it was even listed by the World Gold Council as the world’s best-selling coin. It is highly prized not only in Europe but also in North America and Japan. Until 2001, its face value was 2,000 schillings; since 2002, it has been 100 euros.

The coins owe their name to the renowned Austrian orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic. The obverse of the gold coin features the imposing organ of the Vienna Musikverein. Engraved on the coin are its weight of 1 ounce, its fineness of 999.9, the year of minting, and the face value. Above these details is the inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH.” The reverse side depicts musical instruments used by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The design is accompanied by the orchestra’s name, “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER,” along the upper edge.
