The Royal Canadian Mint’s Maple Leaf gold coins are among the most popular bullion coins in the world. The 1-ounce Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 and is the second-oldest gold bullion coin in the world, after the Krugerrand. Coins with a denomination of 1/10 ounce were first minted in 1982. Since 1983, Maple Leaf gold coins have had a fineness of 999.9/1,000, making them the first bullion coins with this highest fineness.
Until 2023, the obverse of the Maple Leaf features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and starting in 2024, it will feature a portrait of King Charles III, along with the face value and the respective year of minting. The reverse features the eponymous maple leaf, the words “CANADA” and “FINE GOLD,” the fine weight, and the denomination.
The Maple Leaf gold coins are considered particularly counterfeit-resistant. Since 2013, a small laser engraving has been featured on the reverse of the Maple Leaf as a security feature, and since 2015, the coin’s background has been embossed with radial lines.
