The 1 oz Lions Gate Silver Coin 2018 is the second release in the Holy Land Mint’s numismatic bullion series, “Gates of Jerusalem”. The series is dedicated to the historic gates of Jerusalem’s Old City, combining silver with a motif steeped in history.
The Lions Gate is one of the eight gates in the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City. It is located in the eastern section of the city walls, near the Muslim Quarter and opposite the Mount of Olives. The historic gate takes its name from the two lion reliefs that adorn its entrance.
According to tradition, the lion reliefs date back to the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Legend has it that he was warned in a dream that he would be devoured by lions unless he protected Jerusalem by building a city wall. As part of the fortification of Jerusalem, the Lions Gate was constructed between 1538 and 1539.
