The 2018 1 oz Lions Gate Silver Coin is the second release in The Holy Land Mint’s "Gates of Jerusalem" series. Dedicated to the historic gates of Jerusalem’s Old City, the series combines distinctive coin designs with the city’s fascinating history spanning thousands of years.

The walls surrounding Jerusalem’s Old City were built in the 16th century under the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Eight gates provide access through the historic city walls to Jerusalem’s sacred sites, landmarks and traditional markets. One of the most famous is the Lions Gate, which forms the central theme of this silver coin.

The limited "Gates of Jerusalem" series was issued in both gold and silver, with each release highlighting one of Jerusalem’s historic gates. The Lions Gate Silver Coin represents the second issue in this distinctive series.

Lions Gate is located in the eastern wall of Jerusalem’s Old City and is also known as St. Stephen’s Gate. Its name derives from two animal reliefs on the exterior of the gate. Although commonly identified as lions, the figures are associated with the heraldic panthers of the Mamluk Sultan Baybars (1260–1277). The name St. Stephen’s Gate refers to the tradition that the Christian martyr Stephen was stoned near this location.

Struck from 1 oz of silver, this Gates of Jerusalem coin combines a detailed numismatic design with one of Jerusalem’s most historic landmarks, making it particularly appealing to collectors of international silver coins and releases from The Holy Land Mint.
