The design of the 1-ounce American Buffalo is based on a 5-cent coin designed by sculptor James E. Fraser (1876–1953) in 1913. Fraser was one of the most famous American sculptors of the first half of the 20th century.

However, today’s bullion coin is not made of nickel but of pure gold. The buffalo on the reverse is said to be the “Black Diamond,” which was a major attraction at the New York City Central Park Zoo at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. It is not entirely clear which Native American chief served as the model for the image on the obverse. Chiefs Iron Tail (Lakota Sioux), Two Moons (Cheyenne), and John Big Tree (Seneca) all posed for Fraser at the time.

However, there is no doubt that the 1 oz American Buffalo gold coin is one of the most well-known bullion coins worldwide.

Note on packaging: The packaging was updated in 2016. Coins are now shipped in tubes, so we pack the individual coins in coin pouches.
