Practical knowledge about gold

Why is gold so valuable?
Gold is rare, chemically stable, and has been sought after for thousands of years – as jewellery, a store of value, and a means of payment. Its limited availability, global acceptance, and wide range of applications in technology and industry ensure its lasting value.
Is there a difference between bullion coins and collector coins?
Bullion coins are minted in large quantities, have a fixed fine gold content, and are based on the current gold price. Collector coins are often limited editions, more elaborately designed, and may carry additional collector value.
Gold alloys explained: 24k, 18k, 14k – what’s behind it?
The karat number indicates the fine gold content: 24k corresponds to almost pure gold (999/1000), 18k contains 75% gold, and 14k around 58%. Alloys with silver or copper make the precious metal harder and influence both its colour and possible uses.
What is the difference between minted and cast bars?
Minted bars are stamped from rolled gold sheets and have a precise shape with a fine surface structure. Cast bars are created by pouring molten gold into moulds, giving them a slightly irregular, more traditional appearance.
How safe is storing gold at home?
A solid safe and discreet storage are essential. However, banks and specialised precious metal storage facilities usually offer better protection against theft or fire and also make insured resale easier if needed.
Why is gold exempt from VAT in Switzerland?
Investment gold is exempt from value added tax (VAT) in Switzerland, provided certain criteria are met. These include a minimum purity of 995/1000 and a standard tradable form such as bars or bullion coins. Gold is considered an investment asset rather than a consumer good, which is why no VAT is charged on purchase.
What denominations are available for gold bars and coins?
Bars range from 0.5 g up to 1 kg or more. Bullion coins usually start at 1/20 oz and go up to 1 oz or several ounces. This variety allows for investments based on different budgets and makes partial resale easier later on.
Certificates & security features of gold bars
Serial number, manufacturer’s stamp, fineness, and weight ensure authenticity. Many bars are delivered in sealed blister cards that serve as certificates. Modern mintings also include additional features such as micro-engravings or holograms.

A timeless value

Even in ancient Rome, one ounce of gold (around 31 grams) could buy a finely crafted tunic and a good pair of sandals – the appropriate attire of a respected citizen. Fast forward 2,000 years to the present day: even now, one ounce of gold is enough to purchase a tailored suit and a pair of high-quality leather shoes – the modern equivalent of the same standard of living.

Although currencies, empires, and technologies have changed, one thing has remained constant: the purchasing power of gold. This shows that gold has preserved its intrinsic value over thousands of years – not because it generates interest, but because it represents trust and stability.
