- Description
Item no.: 120280/01, Item no.2: 120190/01
The Lion of England is one of the oldest and most iconic royal beasts in heraldry. The lion, which has been used on the shield of England since time immemorial, first appears in heraldry in the twelfth century. As a symbol of pride and courage, the Lion of England on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace held a shield bearing the impaled - or combined - arms of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, symbolising the strength of the couple's union.
The coin shows a depiction of the Lion of England as fearsome as the original stone beast itself. With its sharp claws and its impressive mane, crowned by a royal crown, the Lion of England is truly the king of the royal beasts.
