The design of the 1 oz American Buffalo is based on the design of a 5-cent coin by the sculptor James E. Fraser (1876-1953) from the year 1913. Fraser was one of the most famous American sculptors of the first half of the 20th century. Today's bullion coin, however, is not made of nickel but of pure gold. The buffalo on the reverse is said to be the specimen "Black Diamond", which around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century was an attraction at the New York Central Park Zoo. Which Native American chief served as the model for the depiction on the obverse has not been established beyond doubt. The chiefs Iron Tail (Lakota Sioux), Two Moons (Cheyenne) and John Big Tree (Seneca) posed for Fraser at the time. There is no doubt, however, that the 1 oz American Buffalo gold coin is one of the best-known bullion coins worldwide. Note on packaging: In the course of 2016 the packaging was changed. Delivery is now made in tubes, and we therefore package the individual coins in coin pouches. The illustrations are representative of the coin type. We deliver year issues or motif variants subject to availability. There is no entitlement to delivery of a particular year issue.
