1/2 oz Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin
- Description
Item no.: 124120/01
The Maple Leaf gold coins of the Royal Canadian Mint are among the most popular bullion coins in the world. The 1 ounce Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 and, after the Krugerrand, is the second-oldest gold bullion coin in the world. Coins with the 1/2 ounce denomination were first minted in 1986. Since 1983, the Maple Leaf gold coins have had a fineness of 999,9 / 1.000, making them the first bullion coins with this highest fineness.
The obverse of the Maple Leaf shows, up to 2023, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and, from 2024, the portrait of King Charles III, along with the face value and the respective minting year. The reverse shows the eponymous maple leaf, the inscription "CANADA" and "FINE GOLD", the fine weight and the denomination.
The Maple Leaf gold coins are considered especially forgery-proof. Since 2013 there has been a small laser engraving as a security feature on the reverse of the Maple Leaf, and since 2015 the coin backgrounds have been minted with radial lines.
